Arizona Governor sets date for vote to fill CD 8

Governor Jan Brewer issued an official proclamation today, setting April 17 as the date for the primary in Congressional District 8, and June 12 for the general election. The winner of the general election will fill the seat left open by the resignation of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords officially resigned her seat on Wednesday, in order to focus on her recovery.

The Governor, according to Section 16-222B, had to select a date upon Giffords’s resignation. If a vacancy occurs prior to six months before a general election, the Governor must call for a special primary election and a special general election.

The deadline to file for the general election to a full term in CD2, which is currently CD8, is May 30.
