On August 13, the Tucson Police Department received several 911 calls from citizens reporting that a shooting incident occurred in the 300 block of West Alturas. Officers responded to the area, and located Maria Carolina Coleman-Velasco and Julio Cesar Velasco, both deceased.
Maria Carolina Coleman-Velasco was found seated in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was stopped on the roadway, while Julio Cesar Velasco was lying on the roadway next to the vehicle. There was also a handgun in plain view next to Julio Cesar Velasco. Initial indications were that Julio approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and shot Maria multiple times before turning the gun on himself.
Maria Carolina Coleman-Velasco, age 49, and Julio Cesar Velasco, age 59, were married, but estranged. On the morning of August 13, 2012, Mr. Velasco arrived at Mrs. Coleman-Velasco’s place of business and waited for her to arrive. As she approached her workplace in her vehicle, he walked up to her car and fired a handgun directly at her as she was seated in the driver’s seat. He then turned the gun on himself and fired it. At this time, investigators believe that the attack was unprovoked.
