A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer, Jorge Vargas, has died after being ambushed by an unknown assailant and shot in the driveway of his home.
According to sources, Officer Vargas died Thursday at approximately 5:00 a.m.
Officer Vargas was working on his truck when he was ambushed. Witnesses reported they heard several shots fired at about 4 a.m. and spotted a man fleeing the scene on foot.
Officer Vargas was an 8-year veteran of the MCSO. According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Officer Vargas worked for the Sheriff’s Office Custody Support Bureau in the jail’s food factory, and he often came into contact with inmates.
He is survived by a wife and a 5 year old son.
Officials have no suspects and are investigating whether the shooting was connected to the victim’s position with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department.
