Drugs worth over $1.5 million seized in Nogales

drugsSix people were arrested over the weekend in separate smuggling attempts involving Tucson residents and Mexican nationals.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Nogales seized marijuana, methamphetamine and cocaine in a three-day period that when combined, weighed nearly 206 pounds and worth more than $1.55 million in value.

Friday afternoon, a 36-year-old Tucson woman, who was also a SENTRI trusted traveler, was arrested after officers found nearly 17 pounds of cocaine and more than a pound of methamphetamine within compartments inside of a Ford SUV. The combined value of the seizure was more than $171,000. Her SENTRI card was revoked.

A 24-year-old Mexican man was taken into custody Saturday when a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to drugs within the bumper of his Chevrolet sedan. Nearly 55 pounds of methamphetamine was seized with an estimated value of more than $846,000.

Officers arrested a driver and passenger, both 42 and from Tucson, after a service canine alerted to the presence of drugs in her Chevrolet sedan. More than 102 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $46,000 were removed from within the vehicle’s floor.

That afternoon, a 31-year-old Mexican man was arrested when he attempted to enter the United States with more than 31 pounds of methamphetamine in his vehicle. The drugs were located within the doors of his Nissan sedan. The drugs, valued at nearly $485,000, were also detected by a CBP canine.

Lastly, a 22-year-old Tucson woman was arrested when she attempted to depart the U.S. with a stolen Ford F350 pickup truck. The woman was sent to the secondary area by the CBP officers for further inspection where the vehicle was confirmed to be stolen out of the Phoenix area. The woman was turned over to the Nogales Police Department for further processing.
