On Friday, October 11th, 2013, at 11:23 p.m., the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call related to an accidental shooting that occured after heavy drinking in the 10200 block of North Highway 79 in Florence.
When deputies and medics arrived on the scene, the victim, Robert DeArman III (age 27 of Florence), was pronounced deceased. Robert had a single gunshot wound to the chest.
PCSO Homicide Detectives were called to the scene to investigate. The investigation revealed Robert, along with three other friends, were drinking heavily from 6 p.m. till the time of the shooting. Just prior to the shooting, one of the friends removed a Springfield Armory .40 caliber handgun from his backpack and was showing it to his friends.
Robert was handling the gun, and as he handed it back to the owner, one of the men accidently pulled the trigger. The bullet fired from the gun struck Robert in the chest.
Friends immediately called 9-1-1 and attempted to give him CPR, but it was too late.
The investigation will continue. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office for review.
Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “Guns and alcohol are a deadly combination. These friends gathered for what was supposed to be a night of drinking and fun. Clearly, judgment is impaired when consuming alcohol. As a result of poor judgment, these friends along with the victim’s family, are left to grieve over his untimely death.”
