At last night’s Sunnyside Governing Board meeting one person and two things were missing. Superintendent Isquierdo and the pictures of recently recalled Board members Louie Gonzales, and Bobby Garcia were nowhere to be found.
Make that three things: tension. The tension that has marked the Governing Board meetings for years, under Isquierdo’s leadership, was missing.
The peaceful meeting was brief and the normally hours-long Executive Session was very brief by Sunnyside standards.
New Board members Beki Quintero and Eric Giffin took their seats on the dais for the first time. The Recall election results, had been earlier in the day, approved by the Pima County board of Supervisors.
Recall Committee chair Richard Hernandez told the Board of Supervisors that many in the Sunnyside community that they were disappointed Supervisors Ramon Valadez had turned his back on the community during the contentious recall effort.
The recall stemmed from the past Board’s decision to renew Isquierdo’s contract. Isquierdo’s contract was bought out on Monday, offering relief to the stakeholders in the District.
At last night’s meeting, the new Board voted to replace Isquierdo with assistant superintendent Jeanie Favela. The Board will now begin a search for a permanent superintendent.
