The day after the body of Maribel Victoria Gonzales was identified after being found in the desert area near Trico Road and Avra Valley Road on June 6, 2014, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department began receiving information about someone confessing to the death of the 13-year-old on Facebook.
Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives report that they located the source of the Facebook posts. The Facebook account belonged to a 13-year-old female, who denied making the posts.
During the course of their investigation, Homicide detectives learned the 13-year-old female’s Facebook account had been hacked. Someone was posting information about the death of Maribel on her account.
Maribel’s family last saw her at approximately 8:00 p.m. on June 3, 2014 and she was reported as a runaway to another local law enforcement agency on June 4, 2014. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident and her death is considered suspicious.
The cause of death is pending the completion of a forensic examination.
On June 11, the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit sought the public’s assistance in identifying the deceased female and release information about her the tattoo under left collar bone, “butterfly in flight.”
It was the description of the tattoo that led to the identity of her body.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
