Maricopa County man arrested for hit and run fatality

Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident near Mesa.

Late Friday afternoon around 4:45 p.m. on the eastbound side of Apache Trail, just west of 83rd Place, the MCSO reports that a witness saw a pickup truck swerve into the right lane and hit a bicyclist before taking off.

Fortunately, that witness was able to take down the suspect’s license plate number.Using this information deputies were led to the home of Derek Anthony Tinsley, where they took him into custody a few hours after the crash.

According to friends of the victim he’s a local, homeless Vietnam veteran who’d recently turned 60 years old.

MCSO is working to confirm the identity of the victim.

Tinsley was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on Friday night on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Deputies are also working to determine whether or not he was impaired at the time of the crash.
