Cochise Jail Inmate Dies After Hanging Himself

On Tuesday June 16, 2015 at approximately 4:44 pm, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Detention staff discovered 32 year old Reynaldo Amaya of Douglas unresponsive in his cell.

Officers observed Amaya hanging from a vent in his cell with what appeared to be a makeshift noose made out of a sheet. Officers immediately rendered aid to Amaya who was unresponsive and activated emergency medical personnel to respond.
Amaya was transported to the Copper Queen hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 5:33 pm.

Amaya was booked into the Cochise County Jail on Sunday June 14, 2015 on several charges to include Domestic Violence and harassment. Amaya was also on parole from the Arizona Department of Corrections.

The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office.
