The Yavapai County Sheriff’s office is reporting that just after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, an armed and uniformed Volunteer in Protection (VIP) was shot in the Juniper Woods Ranch subdivision located off HW 89 south of Ash Fork. The VIP was in the process of tracking a speeding ATV he saw in the area earlier and eventually stopped near the gate of a residence where, based on the tracks, it appeared the quad had entered.
The VIP exited his vehicle to check further and as he opened his door, papers flew from his vehicle. As he was picking up these papers, the VIP was struck by a bullet in the hip area. He sought cover as rounds continued to be fired from a nearby home. Additional rounds struck his vehicle. The VIP was able to reenter his vehicle and drive away while requesting assistance.
VIPs drive fully a fully marked Sheriff vehicle, but are not permitted to take any law enforcement actions.
YCSO deputies have set up a perimeter in the area of the concerned home and are in the process of determining next course of action with an effort to identify and arrest suspect(s).
The VIP was transported to the Flagstaff Medical center with non-life threatening injuries.
Around midnight, a suspect in this shooting incident surrendered to YCSO deputies. Additional occupants residing on the property were detained without incident and are being interviewed, according to Dwight D’Evelyn, with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
