Trooper Halts Wrong-Way Vehicle Traveling On I-40

Just before 11 a.m., Arizona State troopers received a report of a wrong-way vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound traffic lanes of I-40 at milepost 269 about 10 miles west of Joseph City, Arizona.

One trooper traveled westbound and lawfully collided with the wrong-way vehicle in an effort to halt its progress. After the collision, both vehicles came to rest partially within the dirt median. The trooper approached the wrong-way vehicle and began giving the wrong-way driver commands in order to take him into custody. During the encounter the trooper fired his weapon and the bullets struck the vehicle.

The driver was not struck by the gunfire, however, due to the collision and as a precaution, he was transported to a local hospital.

The trooper was treated on scene for minor injury. The Department of Public Safety is conducting the investigation.
