Pima County Bicyclist Killed In Early Morning Collision

On September 29, 2015, at approximately 5:25 a.m., Pima County deputies responded to a collision involving a passenger car and a bicyclist, 30-year-old Daniel Wilson, on Orange Grove Road west of La Cholla Boulevard.

When deputies arrived, they learned the bicyclist was eastbound on Orange Grove Road approaching La Cholla Boulevard in the bike lane, when he was struck from behind by an eastbound passenger car merging into the right turn lane. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, however his bicycle was equipped with a flashing red rear light.

Mr. Wilson was transported to Banner-University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

The Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit responded to investigate the incident. Neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors in the collision.

  1. I know that intersection very well and there is plenty of room for both a vehicle and bicycle. If “speed or impairment” were not involved I would suggest that it was caused by the person in the vehicle was doing something on their “cell phone”, which did impair their ability to see how close that they were to the person on the bicycle. Get the cell phone records of the person and check them for any activity at the time of the collision.
