Woman Identified In Tucson Christmas Eve Collision

The pedestrian who was killed in the fatal collision in Tucson on Christmas Eve has been identified as Maria Hong. On December 24, 2015, just after 11:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to a report of a collision involving Ms. Hong on East Broadway Boulevard and South Kolb Road.

Upon arrival, officers located a 34-year-old Ms. Hong on the ground. The officers began rendering aid as members from Tucson Fire Department were arriving on scene. The pedestrian was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Joedaniel Gutierrez, remained on scene and was not injured.

Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that Mr. Gutierrez was driving a 2004 Honda CRV was eastbound on Broadway Blvd. in the center lane approaching a solid green traffic light at South Kolb Road. Ms. Hong was crossing Broadway Blvd. from north to south, away from the crosswalk, approximately one hundred feet west of the intersection. As she traversed the eastbound traffic lanes she was struck by the CRV. Speed was not a factor in this collision. However, Mr. Gutierrez was determined to be impaired. The detectives consulted with the Pima County Attorney’s Office and Mr. Gutierrez was subsequently arrested for Driving Under the Influence – Impaired to the Slightest Degree, a Class 1 Misdemeanor.
