On May 14, 2016, just after 7:00 a.m., Tucson Police officers responded to a rollover collision on East Golf Links Road near South Craycroft Road. Upon arrival, officers located three vehicles involved in the collision.
Members from the Tucson Fire Department arrived on scene a short time later. An 18-year-old male driver was pronounced deceased on scene. His 16-year-old female passenger was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. A 34-year-old male driver was also transported to Banner University Medical Center with serious injuries. A 61-year-old male driver of the third vehicle was not injured.
Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They learned the 18-year-old driver of a copper 2012 Jeep Compass was traveling eastbound on Golf Links Road, East of Craycroft Road with a 16-year-old passenger. He drove through a break in the median and began heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel. He then struck the 34-year-old driver of a white Ford truck traveling westbound on Golf Links Road in the middle lane. The collision caused the Ford truck to rollover and strike a white 2014 Chevy truck driven by the 61-year-old male traveling in the curb lane ahead of the Ford truck. Speed does not appear to be a factor in this collision. Everyone involved in the collision was wearing their seatbelts.
The 18-year-old driver has been identified as Travis Childress. The 16-year-old passenger has been identified as Madisyn Bertsch. Next of kin have been notified.
