Food For Fines Benefits Needy, Maricopa County Library Customers

For the second year, Maricopa County Library District (MCLD) customers who donate food for the needy will get fines and fees waived or reduced by participating in the Library District’s Food for Fines program.

The program begins Friday, July 15 and runs through Saturday, July 23.

Those who wish to participate should take their nonperishable food to the customer service desk at the MCLD library of their choice. Each donated food item is worth a waived amount of $2.

MCLD’s goal is to help customers get their accounts back in good standing so they can once again take advantage of the amazing resources provided by MCLD libraries.  At the same time, the event will be a huge help to community food pantries whose supplies often run low in the summer.

“Unfortunately, there are many Maricopa County residents who are food insecure,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman. “Our libraries provide a critical resource to the community, and this program extends the County’s support for those who need it most.”

Through this program, overdue fines and reshelving fees will be waived up to a maximum of $50. Processing fees and fees associated with lost or damaged items will not be waived.

Food donations will also be accepted from customers who don’t have fines and simply want to contribute. Each $2 food item donation will be randomly applied to the accounts of children that have outstanding fines.

The Library District’s 17 libraries and its administrative office will be accepting food donations. The collected food will be donated to local community food banks. For a library location near you, visit the Library District’s website at or call 602-652-3000 for more information.
