AZ Senate bill would place moratorium on standardized test passing requirement

An emergency measure prohibiting the requirement that a pupil obtain a passing score on Arizona’s standardized test in order to graduate from high school will be the subject of a Arizona Senate Education Committee hearing. S.B. 1191 graduation; passing test score; will be reviewed by the Committee on February 2, at 9 a.m. in Senate Hearing Room 1.

The prohibition will include the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018 school years.

The moratorium does not apply to the civics portion of the naturalization test established this year by the Legislature.

The Senate Education Committee will also consider SB1289. The bill prevents the Department of Education from assigning school districts or charter school governing boards letter grade classifications for a 3-yr period in order for the state board of education to develop and implement a revised accountability system.

School performance indicators and data will still be collected during these school years, however. The state board of education will submit a final report to the governor, speaker of the house and president of the senate for proposed legislation to implement the revised accountability system.
