(Maricopa County, Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio announces the successful conclusion of his 23rd and final Holiday Volunteer Posse Mall Patrol. The volunteer posse began patrolling valley malls for this holiday season on the evening of November 28th and concluded December 26th.
“I am very proud of my volunteer posse for their readiness and dedication during the holiday season” says Arpaio “I hope it brought peace of mind to the holiday shoppers knowing that we were out there keeping them safe as they prepared for the holidays”.
Nearly 200 volunteer reserve deputies and posse members worked almost 1100 hours to protect the public as they conducted their holiday shopping, all at no cost to taxpayers. Sheriff Arpaio began the volunteer mall patrol in 1993 after the violent carjacking’s that took place in 1992 before he was elected Sheriff. So, Arpaio implemented this program to fight a multitude of crime that occurs during one of the busiest times of year in an effort to eliminate more violence. Since its inception of the posse program, very few serious crimes of any kind have been reported.
Over the last several weeks of patrolling valley malls, posse volunteers and deputies made more than 5,000 contacts with the public during this operation. A total of 5 arrests were made, stolen property was recovered and our volunteer posse and deputies assisted other agencies when needed.
“The volunteer holiday mall patrol has rendered positive results every year since I started it in 1993 and I couldn’t ask for a better outcome on my final operation.”
