On March 13, 2017, around 6:15 a.m., Tucson Police officers and detectives responded to a report of a break in and vandalism at the Islamic Center of Tucson). On Monday, surveillance video that captured part of the incident was released.
The video shows that an unknown male was able to gain entry into the Islamic Center through the front door around 3:30 a.m. The male can then be seen walking around various rooms while inside and attempting to open several locked doors. He then can be seen randomly throwing and kicking items around in one of the rooms, to include copies of the Quran (causing damage), before leaving in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as a White or Hispanic male in his twenties.
The incident is being treated as a hate crime or bias-motivated incident. Out of respect to the members of the Muslim community, damage to the Qurans has been redacted from the released video.
