Sawmill Fire Now 89 Percent Contained

This week’s prolonged wind event, a major driver of the Sawmill Fire, will conclude on Sunday, with cooler temperatures expected. Smoldering and occasional flames were observed today within the fire’s perimeter. However, the potential for fire activity will decrease into the night and tomorrow. The number of personnel assigned to the fire will continue to decrease tomorrow due to successful suppression efforts. However crews will continue patrol and mop up operations to ensure the edge of the fire’s perimeter is secure. Firefighter and public safety remains our first priority. Objectives remain full suppression of the fire while protecting surrounding communities and infrastructure.

The Hilton Ranch area northwest of the Sawmill Fire was released from pre-evacuation status today. J-6 and Rain Valley remain under pre-evacuation notice at this time, however they will be released from pre-evacuation status at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 30. The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross closed both the Sonoita Bible Church Shelter and the Shelter located at the South East Regional Park Shooting Range.

An outdoor community meeting is planned for tomorrow, Sunday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m. at milepost 41 on Arizona Highway 82 at Rain Valley Loop Road. American Sign Language services will be available. While we will be unable to provide a Facebook Live Stream, video of the meeting and transcript will be posted to the Sawmill Fire Information Facebook page after the meeting, and shared on Inciweb and Twitter.

Beginning tomorrow, no morning update will be posted. One update will be posted in the evening. No additional media briefings at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds are planned. The Sonoita Horse Racing event scheduled at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds for the weekend of May 6 and 7 is still on schedule.
