Week After Grant, Oracle Collision Pedestrian Dies

Ruben Ramirez, age 82, has been identified as the victim of a collision that occurred on June 20 at the intersection of Grant and Oracles roads.

On June 20, 2017, around 11:45 a.m., Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a report of a serious injury collision involving Mr. Ramirez. Paramedics were first on scene and located Mr. Ramirez lying in the roadway. Mr. Ramirez was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center initially with what appeared to be minor injuries.

While at the hospital, officers learned Mr. Ramirez had struck his head on the roadway and his injury were life-threatening. In the late evening hours on June 26, 2017 Mr. Ramirez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The investigation revealed the driver of a black 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck was westbound on Grant Rd. stopped for a red light at N. Oracle Rd. The driver intended to make a northbound turn from Grant Rd. onto N. Oracle Rd. and was looking south waiting for traffic to clear. Mr. Ramirez was crossing Grant Rd. from North to South in the crosswalk and was struck by the driver as he began his turn at about 5 MPH. The driver immediately stopped his vehicle and called 911. Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this collision. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests or citations have been issued at this time.
