Pedestrian Killed In Midvale Park Area Collision

W. Valencia Rd. and S. Midvale Park Rd. for a report of a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian.

On May 12, 2018, just after 9:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to W. Valencia Rd. and S. Midvale Park Rd. for a report of a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, they located an adult male pedestrian in the roadway with significant injuries.

He was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center. Sadly, the male did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. He has been identified as 31-year-old Michael P. Thomas. Next of kin has been notified.

Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to further the investigation. They learned Mr. Thomas was crossing Valencia Rd. at Midvale Park Rd. from South to North. He was in the crosswalk, but was crossing against the traffic signal. The driver of a gray 1972 Ford F-100 pickup truck was traveling westbound on Valencia Rd. in the curb lane on a green light and struck Mr. Thomas as he entered the curb lane.

The driver remained on scene and was not injured. Neither speed nor impairment appears to be a factor in this collision. The investigation is ongoing and no citations or arrests have been made at this time. Additional details will be released as they become available.

As a 31yr-old man, Mr. Thomas should have known better then to test his invincibility against oncoming traffic.
The greater Tucson area for some still unexplained reason has an extreamly high rate of pedestrian fatalities.
“Crossing against the traffic signal”, Mr. Thomas must have been in a big hurry to shave a minute or two off. I’m sure his time is no longer relevant.
My thoughts and prayers are extended to his next of kin.
