Update Tuesday Morning
The Tucson Police Department, along with the assistance of multiple other law enforcement agencies, worked tirelessly since the shooting to locate 48-year-old Paul Irvin. In the evening of May 14, 2018, detectives with the Tucson Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and the US Marshals developed information that Mr. Irvin would be in the area of S. Alvernon Way and E. 29th St.
With the assistance of the Tucson Police Department K-9 Unit, they located Mr. Irvin at a bus bench in the area. As they attempted to apprehend him, he fled on foot and was struck by a law enforcement vehicle. Officers immediately rendered aid and summoned paramedics.
Members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and transported him to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once he is released from the hospital he will be booked into jail. A gun was recovered with Mr. Irvin.

On May 14, 2018, just after 3:00 a.m., Tucson Police officers working as a two-person unit in a marked Tucson Police Department vehicle conducted a traffic stop on a black 1993 Chevy truck for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle pulled over and stopped on E. Blacklidge Dr., just east of N. Tucson Blvd.
The vehicle had two occupants. One officer made contact with the driver. As the driver exited the vehicle, he fled eastbound and the officer pursued him on foot. Gunfire was exchanged between the driver and the officer.
It is unknown at this time if the driver was struck. Neither the officers nor the passenger was struck with gunfire. The driver was identified as 48-year-old Paul Elliott Irvin. Mr. Irvin has an active felony warrant for a drug offense. This afternoon, detectives with the Tucson Police Department Street Crime Section obtained a felony arrest warrant on Mr. Irvin for Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
He is described as:
- a White male,
- 5’10” – 6’0”, 160 lbs,
- with long brown hair,
- hazel eyes
- possible facial hair.
He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and blue jeans.
Additional officers, including the Tucson Police Department SWAT, K-9 and Air Unit, along with deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the US Marshal’s responded to the area to conduct an extensive search for Mr. Irvin. Cragin Elementary School (2945 N. Tucson Blvd.) was closed for the day as the search continued. Mr. Irvin has not been located. He is considered armed and dangerous.
