Tucson Man Arrested For Fatal August Collision

Gaylord Patrick Garrett, age 48, was arrested on November 21, 2018 in connection with the death of 34-year-old Alexandra Belbey in August 2018. Garrett was arrested at his residence and booked into Pima County Jail on one count of 2nd Degree Murder.

On August 20, 2018, at approximately 1:50 a.m., Tucson Police officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department responded to the area of E. Pima St. and N. Jefferson Ave. for a report of a serious injury collision involving a vehicle that had rolled over. The two occupants of that vehicle, Garrett and Belbey, were found in the roadway. Ms. Belbey was pronounced deceased on scene. Garrett was transported to Banner University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Tucson Police learned that the vehicle involved was Garrett’s black 2006 Chevrolet Corvette. Based on roadway evidence and witness statements, detectives were able to determine that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on E. Pima St. at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle passed through the intersection of N. Craycroft Rd, Garrett lost control and drove over the south curb, causing the passenger side of the vehicle to collide with several trees and part of a block wall. The vehicle continued eastbound and as it reached N. Jefferson Ave, it struck a light pole and a fire hydrant. After striking the fire hydrant, the vehicle began to roll and both occupants were ejected.
