Tucson Police are investigation an accident that occurred on September 10, 2019, just before 12:30 a.m., that took the life of 28 year-old Oscar R. Hernandez Jr.
According to the Tucson Police Department (TPD), officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Mission Road and W. Ohio Street in response to a report of a single vehicle collision with serious injuries. It was also reported that the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
Detectives were told in interviews conducted by investigators, a silver 2004 Mercedes-Benz passenger car was traveling at a high rate of speed south on Mission Road. As the Mercedes approached the intersection of S. Mission Road and Ohio Street, the road cures slightly to the left. The vehicle did not follow the curve in the roadway. The Mercedes struck the west curb and drove over the sidewalk. The vehicle continued in a southwest direction through the desert until it reached an embankment on the north side of Ohio Street. At that point, the vehicle became airborne, passing over Ohio Street coming to rest against a hill on the southwest corner of Mission Road and Ohio St. Immediately after stopping, the vehicle caught fire.
Mr. Hernandez was not wearing his seat belt during the collision and was ejected from the vehicle. Mr. Hernandez’s body came to rest several feet west of the vehicle.
According to the TPD, interviews and roadway evidence indicate that speed was a factor in the collision.
