Tucson’s anti-growth ethos is now swiftly painting the 1.1 million population Metro into the “demographic corner of death”.
Nothing else will matter. Not its vastly overpriced, sparkling new downtown that consumes much needed tax monies. Not its Woke virtue-signaling enticements to a national audience of fellow Woke-losers. Not its island of wasted talent known as UA, with its private real estate fairyland for pampered students (80%+ leave after graduation). Not the planting of a million trees, saving the Santa Ritas, or painting “BLM” on city streets. Not its elites’ fantasy belief that its malnourished, tech-startup prowess makes it the “next Austin”. None of that stuff.
By 2030, Tucson could easily be a violent, boiling cauldron of angry young brown people, seriously pissed at the lack of decent jobs, except for catering to the whims of an increasingly impotent minority of wealthy, white geezers. Not a bad deal if you aspire to be the head waiter, concierge, or chief cook. Bed pans & leaf-blowers never looked so good!
And take heart, they can live in the newly approved backyard casitas, working domestic jobs with the illegals from Central America in the ‘correct’ hipster neighborhoods downtown. All in a newly approved “Sanctuary City II, the Sequel”, now being planned. Such-a-deal!
The single biggest harbinger of this demographic train-wreck…. is the profound change currently taking place in the rest of Arizona. It is a BROAD, UNPRECEDENTED, TECHNO-ECONOMIC BOOM, absolutely ignored by Tucson’s clueless Woke media, Bozo-elitists, northeastern Foothills liberals, university refugees, and ‘Dirty T’ Hard-Left homies.
The boom is sucking down Arizona talent like a celestial black hole; Tucson is being daily strip-mined of its best & brightest. Everyone else gets the low value-added service work.
Instead of trying to figure out how to take advantage of what’s happening, the craven, so-called “business leadership” of Tucson has simply turned pedestrian-goombah, watching it unfold. They absolutely refuse to take-on the very regressive local forces—that are in abject denial the Arizona boom is even happening.
What needs to occur is that Tucson’s true business elite, AKA the Southern Arizona Leadership Council (SALC), after nearly a quarter century of underwhelming performance, should do a little housekeeping and deadwood trimming. That means booting out the non-profits, the government-funded educrats & apparatchiks, and the big-business corporate drones there, like the cable cartel queens protecting their local monopolies. Ditto the local barristers who are simply trolling for business or an opportunity to do some insider real estate deals.
Unfortunately, I seriously doubt this will happen; meanwhile Tucson continues on with its demographic rot.
