Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred near 33rd Avenue and Southern Avenue.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, on March 29, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., multiple suspects attempted an armed robbery of a vehicle in the parking located in the area of 3300 West Southern Avenue. During this attempt, a Phoenix Police Department officer, working in an off-duty capacity at a nearby business, was contacted and advised of what was happening in the parking lot. The officer approached the area to make contact with those involved. At least one of the suspects who was armed with a handgun began to fire in the direction of the officer. The officer suffered multiple gunshot wounds during this encounter. The officer did not fire his firearm during this incident. The suspects involved in this incident took off from the area before additional officers arrived on scene.
The officer who was shot remains hospitalized in stable condition. He was struck multiple times by gunfire and continues his recovery. He has been with the department for seven years and is a father, husband and son.
The search continues for those responsible for the violent, ambush style attack on a Phoenix police officer. Investigators continue to search the area where the incident occurred for surveillance video from nearby businesses. Anyone who was in the area at the time who may have left the before investigators had a chance to talk with them are urged to reach out to police.
Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan is personally asking anyone with information or video related to the shooting to share it with police. He also has a message for the suspects.
“I’m going to encourage the folks who were involved in this incident to turn themselves in. We will not rest we will not stop until we hold them to account for their crimes to the fullest extent of the law,” said Sullivan at a news briefing Saturday morning.
Detectives, professional analysts and technicians are working around the clock investigating this incident. The suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.
