A man is in custody after he allegedly beat a 70-year-old female employee of Sprouts with a club inside the store in Sahuarita.
According to the Sahuarita Police Department, on May 21, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to Sprouts located at 18755 S Nogales Hwy, for a report of a man assaulting a woman inside the store with a club.
Upon arrival, officers were able to take 42-year-old Green Valley resident Daniel Kovarik Jr. into custody without incident. Santa Rita Fire also responded and transported the victim to a local hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
There is no indication that the suspect and victim knew one another.
Kovarik was booked into the Pima County Jail for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Dangerous Instrument, Aggravated Assault Serious Physical Injury, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Assault, two counts of Disorderly Conduct, two counts of Threatening and Intimidating, Criminal Damage and an unrelated felony arrest warrant.
Kovarik is currently being held in the Pima County Jail on a $45,000 bond.

The comments I’ve read herein do not reflect poorly on the lady, but rather the witnesses who could have stopped it and on a disintegrating society that in bygone days would have demanded her immediate protection, but no longer. I don’t think anyone lacks compassion for your friend, but there is true and well-reasoned outrage at a clear breakdown of societal norms that include courage, defense, involvement, and natural justice.
Peaceable people should not have to walk around scared in public, but criminals, malcontents, and the afflicted _should_ have to worry about immediate and matching consequences for their misbehavior.
Bring back Old West justice.

I cant fathom what a 70 year old woman could do or say to prompt an assault like that. Even if she is bat &%#! crazy (I have no evidence that she is). I agree someone should have stepped in but the liabilities are a reality when you become a defender.

My experience after 70 years tells me the answer is MICE! I’ve been involved in incidents where I was the only one trying to stop attacks with only my big mouth berating the oppressor. While men stood around just watching, in one incidence a security guard just stood there while a woman abused her 4 y/o son!!! I begged him to come help me to no avail.
She got away from me with kid in tow. This was 40 years ago, I imagine it’s worse now, But I say this with all sincerity, Let me run across some A-whole and old or not, his a$$ is mine, and I am a woman.

Schoolyard fisticuff are treated as ‘assault’. ‘Zero tolerance’ means the consequences of fighting back can be worse than just taking a beating. Consensual bar fights are practically terrorism, and heaven help you if the person you are fighting produces more melanin than you. Also, let’s not ignore that some State and municipalities will actually assault, kidnap, and cage you for daring to merely carry the tools to defend yourself. Sadly, there is no social appetite to resist these restrictions.
No one wants to live in a society where might makes right, but when we codify docility and violently enforce forbearance, what we end up with is prey animals for a population and good strong people either in jail along side amoral savages or as apathetic standers-by, watching but unwilling to go to jail for doing the right thing.
Our society has leaned to far into the feminine and is kindly and gently falling the **** apart one safespace at a time. It’s time to bring back a more patriarchal society where manners and disrespect are enforced and address, respectively, more directly and immediately; where men feel social pressure _and support_ for defending women, children, the elderly, and the physically incapable.
