Phoenix Police Commander Killed, 2 Officers Hospitalized In Ambush

Phoenix – Phoenix Police Commander Greg Carnicle was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on Sunday shortly after 7:00 p.m. Two other officers are in stable condition at a local hospital.

Commander Carnicle was a 31-year veteran of the force.

“Tonight, we lost a true hero,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said. “I knew him for 30 years. He and I worked together in Maryvale precinct and used to enjoy way too much Church’s Chicken on duty. To be able to stand here today and say that one of my good friends is lost is troubling.”

Commander Carnicle leaves behind a wife and four adult children.

The three officers were shot when they responded to a residence in the area 40th Drive and Pinnacle Peak.

Preliminary reports indicate the officers were “ambushed.”

Gov. Doug Ducey has ordered all flags at state buildings to be lowered to half-staff on Monday to honor Commander Carnicle.
