Burglary Suspects Arrested After Cochise County Deputies Save Them From Overdosing

Two burglary suspects were saved from overdosing by quick acting Cochise County deputies this week.

According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday December 27, 2023 at approximately 12:56 pm, deputies responded to a call on Double Adobe Road about a man breaking into an RV.

While the deputies were enroute to the scene, the property owner said that the suspects, two men and one woman, had left the area driving a white RV.

Deputies were advised by the victim that he and his wife arrived at the property in McNeal, when they saw a Hispanic female with blond tinted hair and a young Hispanic male in his twenties in and around a mobile home that was parked on the property.

Near Maddux Road and Double Adobe Road, an RV matching the description was pulled over on the right shoulder of the road eastbound immediately before deputies made contact. Once behind the stopped vehicle, deputies saw a man and woman outside of the vehicle who were identified as 46-year-old Maria Isela Encinas Solano, of Pirtleville, and 28 year old Alan Francisco Contreras Hernandez, of Douglas.

Solano and Contreras Hernandez claimed that they were on a property on West Double Adobe Road collecting firewood but they had recently left the area.

Contreras Hernandez matched the description of the suspect provided by the victim and was arrested. Contreras was placed into the back of a patrol vehicle for transport. As Contreras was in the vehicle he began to exhibit medical signs of overdosing and deputies administered NARCAN.

As deputies were interviewing Maria Encinas, she said that her brother, 47-year-old Rene Martinez Encinas, of Douglas, was inside of the RV bathroom. Deputies approached the vehicle and gave orders for Encinas to exit the vehicle without response. Deputies then returned to a patrol vehicle and gave instructions for Encinas to exit the vehicle using the PA system, again without response. An identification check on Encinas resulted in notification of a felony warrant for a Probation Violation.

Encinas remained inside of the RV and less lethal pepper ball rounds were used to get him to exit the vehicle as instructed. Encinas ultimately exited the RV with his hands up and was taken into custody.

At the time of being placed into the patrol unit, Encinas began to exhibit medical signs of overdosing and deputies responded with administering NARCAN.

Encinas was stabilized by Douglas medics who had responded to the scene, and he was transported to the Douglas Copper Queen hospital.

As Encinas was being transferred between the ambulance gurney and the emergency room bed, he became aggressive and disorderly and bit one of the deputies assisting in the transfer.

Maria Encinas was issued a citation for Criminal Trespass and was released from the scene.

Contreras and Encinas were medically cleared and were booked into the Cochise County Jail on multiple charges including Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer charges for Rene Encinas.
