Tucson bank robber real, leaves fake bomb

Today, deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office responded to call of a bank robbery the Chase Bank inside the Basha’s Shopping on Thornydale Road. A man entered the bank branch about 1 p.m., and approached a teller and made demands for money. He told the bank teller he had a bomb.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect left a suspicious package on the teller window and fled the bank. The bank, the Basha’s, and adjacent stores were immediately evacuated.

The Pima County Regional Bomb Squad responded to further investigate. At approximately 2:30 p.m., members of the Bomb Squad entered the bank to view the device. A robot was also sent inside to the teller window to manipulate the device. It was determined to be a hoax.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 30-40’s, 5’7” to 5’9” tall. He was wearing blue jeans, a dark colored shirt and a yellow reflective traffic vest. He was also wearing a black wig under a white “ASU” ball cap. Photographs were previously released of the suspect in an attempt to identify and locate him. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME (882-7463).
