AZ House to discuss Common Core Standards

The chairs of three state House committees charged with crafting education and business-related policy will convene a special joint hearing on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 8:30 AM to discuss the Arizona Common Core Standards (ACCS).

The hearing will be chaired by House Education Committee Chairman Doris Goodale, Commerce Committee Chairman Tom Forese and Higher Education & Workforce Committee Chairman Jeff Dial. The hearing will feature testimony from representatives from Arizona industries to gain their insight on how Arizona’s education system affects the state’s overall business climate.

“My colleagues and I believe it is important to hear from business leaders to understand exactly how these new, more rigorous standards will affect employers’ ability to attract new talent,” Rep. Forese said. “It is our belief that by fully implementing Arizona’s Common Core Standards, we will be giving our state a leg up in its ability to attract jobs. This is an important discussion that will help set the groundwork for what will be a major issue at the Legislature in 2013.”

Rep. Goodale said she was encouraged by the fact that ACCS was the result of a longstanding partnership between business and the state. “For many years, Washington, D.C. has been telling the states what is best when it comes to our kids’ education,” Rep. Goodale said. “The Common Core reframes education challenges by bringing the states together to craft standards that will best fit the needs of our students.”
