Senate moves to allow HOAs to dictate home interiors

Republican Sen. Bob Worsley joined all of the Democrat senators on Tuesday to killed H.B. 2614, designed to protect homeowners from an extreme overreach by HOAs. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Warren Petersen, would have prohibited a homeowners’ association from reviewing or approving plans for the interior portion of any structure in a community.

The bill’s language was not restrictive on HOAs in regards to their traditional purview. The bill would have permitted “an association to review or approve of the exterior portion of plans, including the exterior dimensions and location of the residence or other structure.

The bill came out of the Senate committee as a striker, only to die at the hands of Worsley and Driggs, who joined in to provide cover to Worsley.

An informational hearing is expected to be held in the House.
