Governor Doug Ducey on Thursday announced the appointment of former Arizona Speaker of the House Andy Tobin as director of the Arizona Department of Insurance. Tobin, who failed in his congressional bid, has worked as director of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures, since January.
Tobin’s experienced is limited. Tobin owned and operated a small local Farmers Insurance agency for six years and more recently, owned his own employee benefit company. From 2006 to 2015, Mr. Tobin represented rural Arizona in the state House, serving as Majority Whip, Majority Leader and eventually Speaker of the House from 2011 until 2015.
Tobin’s appointment was expected as the Department of Weights and Measures is set to close. The Legislature passed bill at Ducey’s request to close the agency that provides consumer protections. According to Ducey the Departments duties will be assumed by multiple agencies.
