Mexican border crossing card (or “laser visa”) holders who plan to make an extended visit to the United States during the Christmas holiday season are urged to apply for their I-94 early to avoid expected lines and delays at Arizona’s ports of entry.
“With the Christmas holiday season just around the corner, we expect December to be a very busy month at the ports,” said San Luis Port Director John Schwamm. “With that in mind, we suggest those travelers needing permits to apply early and avoid possible delays.”
Travelers seeking I-94 documents (Permisos) may apply any time. The permit, which costs $6, allows visitors crossing through the San Luis border to stay up to six months in the United States.
In addition, a new service for Trusted Travelers known as “Front of the Line” has also been launched for the holiday season. While maintaining the highest standards of security, Port of San Luis officials are initiating this new service to expedite the I-94 process for those enrolled in SENTRI or the Global Entry programs. This “Front of the Line” service provides Trusted Travelers a faster and more efficient I-94 process during the holiday season.
Due to the large volume of travelers applying for permits, and a shortage of parking spaces at ports of entry, applicants should consider walking into the U.S. to obtain the I-94 permits prior to a planned trip. Parking in Mexico and the United States can be a concern when traveling with younger or older family members. All traveling family members requesting a permit must be present during the I-94 application process, and must be able to establish financial solvency and proof of residency outside the U.S.
