James Allen Darland, who was caught on video offering an undercover Maricopa County detective his dog for sex, was found guilty of 1 count Conspiracy to Commit Bestiality (Felony 6) and sentenced to jail and 3 years’probation on March 29.

Darland had contacted a Maricopa County undercover Sheriff’s detective through a popular web site to arrange for sexual liaisons with various farm animals in exchange for sex with his own personal dog Wiley. Darland had been having sex with his neighbor’s horse, dog and sheep in the state of Washington for some time.

Darland also had just retired from a nationally known package delivery company after working there for over 23 years and when delivering packages for the company, would often have sex with customers’ dogs while they were absent from the residence while on his route. He also spoke of stray dogs that he would find on his route which he captured to use for sexual gratification. WileySheriffDarlands dog, Wiley was seized by the Sheriff’s Office and is being cared for and rehabilitated by the Sheriff’s MASH unit and the dog will be taking part in a special pilot program for inmates incarcerated in Maricopa County Jail.

Arpaio says bestiality is nothing to make light of. He quotes a study that says 96% of persons who engaged in bestiality also admitted to sexually abusing humans. Another study reported that 72% of juvenile sex offenders admitted to an interest in bestiality. A third study revealed that in up to 40% of judicially ordered seizures in pedophile cases, both child and animal abuse images were
discovered.

“The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is believed to be one of the few law enforcement agencies concentrating on the investigation and arrest of those that violate the animal bestiality laws. These types of investigations will continue,” says Arpaio.
