A handful of Republican lawmakers joined Democrats on Wednesday in opposition to Arizona parents and their right to give consent to intrusive surveys. The bill, introduced by Rep. Mark Finchem at the request of parents across the state, would require the informed consent of parents before students are subjected to surveys that solicit personal information.
Rep. Finchem voted against the measure on the House floor when it became evident that it would fail in order to bring it back for consideration today. Only a representative, who has voted with the prevailing side, can ask for a bill to be reconsidered.
Republican lawmakers Heather Carter, Paul Boyer, Doug Coleman, T.J. Shope, Frank Pratt, and Rob Robson have stood in firm opposition to parental rights and students privacy time and time again. As a result, parents are recruiting primary opponents who recognize parental primacy and are dedicated to protecting student’s personally identifiable information.
