In November 2015, Tucson voters rejected a request to give city councilmembers a raise. According to Ballotpedia, if approved, Proposition 405 would have amended the Tucson City Charter to increased “the mayor’s salary from $3,500 to $4,030 per month, while each council member’s salary would have been increased from $2,000 to $2,288 per month.”
In July, the ADI filed a Request For Records with the City of Tucson for the calendars for the Mayor and Council members. The records were sought after numerous sources reported that a petition circulator knocked on a door in the Phoenix Valley and were surprised to find Councilmember Shirley Scott. Scott reportedly told the circulator not to tell anyone in Tucson that she was now living north.
Scott and her husband still have a residence in Tucson, but recently sold their business property. One source advised that the County had been asked to investigate her residency but their associates declined.
At last Tuesday’s Council meeting, resident gadfly Keith van Heyningen asked Scott if in fact she was living in the Phoenix Valley. She was told not to answer the question by City Attorney Mike Rankin.
Had she been allowed to answer – whatever she said -would have to be taken with a rock of salt. Just last week, Scott’s staff lied about her activities – leaving little doubt that the entries on her calendar are less-than-reliable. With that being said, there is little on her calendar. However, she appears to have returned to town for now.
