Tucson Police Identify Deceased Victim In Gang Related Shooting

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Tucson’s Midtown area.

On April 23, 2017 at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to an apartment complex located at 5180 E. 22nd Street for multiple reports of a shooting. Officers located three male victims (two adults and one juvenile teenager) with obvious signs of gunshot trauma. Tucson Fire immediately transported all 3 victims to a local hospital. One of the adult victims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased prior to arrival. Based on initial information gathered from responding officers, the shooting appeared to be gang related.

Detectives were able to determine that the three victims were at the apartment complex to meet with a friend. As they were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of the complex, they were approached by an unknown male suspect. A verbal altercation ensued and the suspect pulled out a handgun. The suspect then fired multiple rounds into the vehicle striking all three victims. He was last seen fleeing the scene in a dark colored sedan.

The deceased victim has been identified as 28-year-old Angel Valenzuela. Next of kin has been notified. The second adult victim has non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The juvenile teenage victim has serious injuries from his gunshot wounds, but is expected to survive.

As detectives continue their investigation, they are asking anyone with information to please call 88-CRIME. You CAN remain anonymous.
