Flagstaff Man Tries To Report Crime Then Shoots Innocent Man

David Scrum

On 5-17-17 at approximately 10:00 p.m., 38-year-old David Scrum came into the Coconino County Jail Lobby and attempted to summon an officer to report a crime. Scrum was told to go to the Flagstaff Police Department to speak with an officer.

Scrum went to the police department lobby and attempted to enter but doors were locked. He used the phone to call police, but left before his call was answered. He left and returned to the property multiple times.

At 11:08 p.m. a unidentified man left the jail lobby and was confronted by Scrum. Scrum asked the man if he worked at the jail. The man responded that he did not, and Scrum told him he was trying to get inside. Scrum then shot the man one time and robbed him. Scrum fled the area in a vehicle.

The victim was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

After Flagstaff Police released Scrum’s photograph via social media and other media outlets, they received a call informing them that the suspect was Scrum. Police began to search for Scrum and received information that he was at a local hospital after he had requested to be taken there.

Police contacted him there and he confessed to being involved in the shooting. Scrum was arrested for Attempted 2nd Degree Homicide. He was then booked into Coconino County Jail.
