Tucson Man Killed In Single Vehicle Crash Into Drainage Ditch

On May 25, 2017 at approximately 2:15 a.m, Tucson Police officers responded to the 500 block of North Igo Way for a report of a single vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers located a pick-up truck in a drainage ditch.

The truck was on its side and the driver, identified as 76-year-old Frank Gamez, was still in the vehicle. Members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to assist, however Mr. Gamez was pronounced deceased shortly after their arrival. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Detectives were able to determine that the pick-up, a 2002 Ford F250, was traveling southbound on North Igo Way approaching East 5th Street. At that location, the roadway is split by a drainage ditch with guardrails and signage directing traffic. Mr. Gamez did not follow the curve in the roadway and drove through the guardrail and into the drainage ditch approximately 8 feet below.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision. Mr. Gamez was not wearing a seatbelt.
