I-19 Agents Seize More Than 80 Pounds of Hard Narcotics From U.S. Smugglers

Agents seized a combination of cocaine and meth that smugglers hidden inside the vehicle panels

Nogales Station Border Patrol agents assigned to the Interstate 19 immigration checkpoint near Tubac, Arizona seized more than 25 pounds of cocaine and over 56 pounds of methamphetamine in two separate incidents Thursday.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., agents referred a Chevy Avalanche for additional inspection after a canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect emitting from the vehicle. During a search and with the utilization of an x-ray vehicle, agents found nearly 38 pounds of methamphetamine hidden within the tailgate. The driver, a male United States citizen, was arrested for narcotics smuggling.

Nearly an hour later, agents referred a silver Hyundai sedan for additional inspection after a canine alert. During a search and again with the utilization of an x-ray vehicle, agents located more than 25 pounds of cocaine and 18 pounds of methamphetamine hidden within the vehicle panels. The driver, a male United States citizen, and the passenger, a Legally Admitted Permanent Resident, were both arrested.

The drugs, vehicles and the three individuals were arrested for narcotic smuggling and are in federal custody.
