2 Men Killed In Tucson’s Christopher Columbus Park Accident

On June 2, 2017, shortly before noon, Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a report of a serious injury collision involving two pedestrians, 79-year-old Billy Cox, and 62-year-old Michael Holguin, and a vehicle at Christopher Columbus Park located at 4355 N. Silverbell Rd.

Both men succumbed to injuries and were pronounced deceased on scene.

The adult male driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was not injured.

Detectives learned Mr. Cox and Mr. Holguin had been at the park fishing for several hours with their friend. Mr. Cox and Mr. Holguin both have difficulty walking and use walkers to assist them. They had been fishing from chairs or a seated walker. Shortly before noon, their friend went to the parking lot to retrieve a black 1999 Jeep Cherokee so the group could pack up for the day. The friend retrieved the Cherokee and backed it up near Mr. Cox and Mr. Holguin to load their fishing gear. He was looking over his shoulder and out the back window as he continued backing near the men but hit the accelerator instead of the brake, striking and dragging both men. He stopped the vehicle and other citizens responded over to assist with CPR. Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this collision.
