Landspout Tornado Spotted South Of Downtown Phoenix

The National Weather is reporting that heavy winds in the Valley Thursday night created a landspout tornado south of downtown Phoenix.

According to the National Weather Service, video evidence shows a small landspout developing at around 5:03 p.m.

A landspout tornado occurred in July in Marana, according to the National Weather Service.

A landspout tornado forms from the ground upwards and when it connects to the cloud it is considered a tornado. These are different from supercell tornadoes that are common in the midwest when the circulation drops from the cloud to the ground.

Landspout tornadoes are the most common type seen around Arizona.
