With Only 3 Candidates Left, TUSD Board Chooses Trujillo

After former Rose Elementary principal Stephen Trejo removed his name for consideration, the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board selected interim superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo for a permanent position.

Dr. Mark Stegeman was the lone no vote. He stated that he was voting against the agenda item due to objections over procedure.

Board members Adelita Grijalva and Kristel Foster had lobbied aggressively for Trujillo.

Sources say that the Board did not extend the search for more qualified candidates for fear that it would further weaken the public’s confidence in the District and harm chances to pass a bond measure in the future.

Maria Marin and Donna Hargens were among the final four candidates.
