Arizona Crime Rate Overall Remains The Same, Violent Crimes Up

On Monday, the FBI released its 2016 Unified Crime Report data for Arizona. Violent crime increased while property crime decreased.

Overall violent crime rose 4.1 percent last year, while property crime fell 1.3 percent compared to 2015 figures.

In comparing the 2016 Part I crime rates with historical data for Arizona, the Violent Crime rate increased 13% from 2015 and is the highest violent crime rate since 2008. However it is still 34% less than the highest historical violent crime rate of 715 violent offenses per 100,000 seen in 1993.

TOTAL ARREST SUMMARY

There were 248,771 persons arrested in 2016.

Adult arrests were 221,973 and juvenile arrests were 26,798.

Males accounted for 72.6 percent and females accounted for 27.9 percent.

Part I offenses accounted for 49,358 arrests.

Part II offenses accounted for 199,413 arrests

The Property Crime Rate continues a six-year long trend of declining. At 2,978 property crimes per 100,000 it is the lowest rate seen since 1961, which had 2,969 property crimes per 100,000.

For specific violent offenses; the murder rate increased from 4.5 to 5.5, the same rate as seen in 2012; rape, reflecting a new definition, increased from 45.5 to 47.5; robbery increased from 93.3 to 101.8, just over the previous low of 99.9 in 1969 and similar to the rate of 100.3 in 2013; assault increased from 266.9 to 315.4, a new high since 2006 at 312.7.

For specific property offenses, burglary dropped from 557.5 to 544.4, reflecting a new historic low dating back to 1960; larceny theft dropped from 2235.2 in 2015 to 2168.1, reflecting a low not seen since 1963 at 2,002.1; while auto theft increased from 246.2 to 265.8, though just 4% ahead of the previous historic low of 255.7 in 2013.

STATE CRIME SUMMARY/CRIME INDEX

 There were 230,129 Crime Index Offenses reported in 2016.
 August recorded the highest incidence of offenses with 20,720 while February recorded the lowest incidence of offenses with 18,247.
 The value of property stolen was $183,756,117.
 The value of property recovered was $44,606,126 for a recovery rate of 24.2 percent.
 Stolen motor vehicles accounted for 35.5 percent of the total stolen property and 81.4 percent of the total recovered property.
 The crime rate for 2016 for Arizona was 3,384.2 crimes per 100,000 population based on an estimated population of 6,835,518.

ARRESTS / CLEARANCES

 During 2016, a total of 49,358 persons were arrested for index offenses.
 Adult index arrests were 42,952 and juvenile arrests were 6,406.
 Males accounted for 68.1 percent of the index arrests and females accounted for 33.4 percent.
 There were 45,807 clearances, or 19.9 percent, of index offenses reported in 2016. Juveniles represented 9.3 percent of this total.

VIOLENT CRIME SUMMARY OFFENSES

 There were 27,704 violent crimes reported in 2016.
 Violent crimes accounted for 12.0 percent of the total Crime Index.
 The highest number of violent crimes was reported in July with 2,475 offenses while the lowest number was reported in February with 2,055 offenses.
 Aggravated assault accounted for the largest incidence of violent crimes with 17,431 offenses while Human Trafficking accounted for the smallest with 19 offenses.
 The value of property stolen was $2,861,330.
 The crime rate was 407.4 offenses per 100,000 population.

ARRESTS / CLEARANCES

 There were 10,113 arrests for violent crimes in 2016.
 Adult arrests were 9,119 and juvenile arrests were 994.
 Males accounted for 83.5 percent and females accounted for 17.0 percent.
 There were 10,006 clearances, or 36.1 percent, of violent crimes reported in 2016. Juveniles represented 8.2 percent of this total.

PROPERTY CRIME SUMMARY OFFENSES

 There were 202,425 property crimes reported in 2016.
 Property crimes accounted for 88.0 percent of the total crime index.
 The highest number of property crimes was reported in August with 18,288 offenses while the lowest number was reported in November with 16,107 offenses.
 Larceny-theft accounted for the largest incidence of property crimes with 146,765 offenses while arson accounted for the smallest with 1,019 offenses.
 The value of property stolen was $180,894,787.
 The crime rate was 2,976.8 offenses per 100,000 population.

ARRESTS/CLEARANCES

 There were 39,425 arrests for property crimes in 2016.
 Adult arrests were 33,833 and juvenile arrests were 5,412.
 Males accounted for 63.8 percent and females accounted for 37.5 percent.
 There were 35,801 clearances, or 17.7 percent, of property crimes reported in 2016. Juveniles represented 9.6 percent of this total.
