3 Maricopa County Detention Officers Assaulted By Inmates In 2 Days

A Maricopa County jail officer was viciously beaten and repeatedly shot with a stun gun by an inmate during an unsuccessful escape attempt at a courthouse in downtown Phoenix. In the last two days, two separate attacks by inmates on Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention staff have occurred.

The most recent incident occurred Tuesday morning at the Superior Court Building as inmates were being transferred for court appearances. Detention Officer Clinton Payne, a 12 year MCSO veteran, was attacked by a closed custody suspect. He was beaten by the inmate who deployed Officer Payne’s Taser on him before being restrained by other Detention Officers. Officer Payne was treated on scene by paramedics from the Phoenix Fire Department and taken by ambulance to a hospital where he is currently being evaluated.

On October 2, 2017, Field Training Officer (FTO) Thomas Touchet, an 11 year MCSO veteran, and Detention Officer Alfred Fuller, a 14 year MCSO veteran, were assaulted by two inmates while handing out laundry in a housing unit at the 4th Avenue Jail. The inmates were restrained by other detention officers. In the altercation, Touchet sustained a cut in his mouth and Officer Fuller sustained a broken nose. Both Touchet and Fuller are receiving treatment for their injuries.

The inmate involved in the October 3 incident is 36 year old Shane Tadlock. Tadlock is housed at the 4th Avenue Jail for Armed Robbery, Dangerous Drug Possession, and Drug Paraphernalia.

The two inmates involved in the October 2 incident are 23 year old Jamaine Richardson and 39 year old Jerrold Burnett. Burnett is also housed at the 4th Avenue Jail for 1st Degree Murder and Armed Robbery. Richardson is housed at the 4th Avenue Jail for several counts of Armed Robbery, Aggregated Assault, Burglary, and Threatening.
