DPS Troopers Shot At During Pursuit On I-17

On Sunday, at approximately 8 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Trooper attempted to make a traffic stop on a gold Honda passenger car for a traffic violation on southbound I-17 at milepost 244 (one mile north of Black Canyon City). The vehicle failed to yield to the trooper and a pursuit was initiated.

Shortly after the initiation of the pursuit troopers were notified the vehicle was reported stolen out of New Mexico. Approximately six minutes after the initial traffic stop attempt, troopers advised shots were fired at their vehicles from the suspect vehicle. The pursuit continued southbound on I-17 where the vehicle exited the freeway west onto Carefree Highway.

With the assistance of the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office (MCSO), Phoenix Police Department (PPD) and helicopters from both PPD and AZDPS, the vehicle was located behind the Albertsons Grocery Store located on the northeast corner of Carefree Highway and North Valley Parkway.

After a thorough search of the area and with the help of witnesses, the suspects were taken into custody without incident at the bagel shop on the west side of North Valley Parkway. The suspects are only identified as a male and female until their identities can be properly confirmed.
