Sierra Vista Domestic Violence Incident Ends In Suicide

Sierra Vista Police Officers responded to reports of a man, Kevin Jacobs, age 29, with a gun on Saturday, arriving to find an escalated domestic violence situation involving Jacobs barricading himself in the family home with a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol.

Jacobs, of Sierra Vista, was called “emotionally disturbed” and was asking for “suicide by cop,” a family member, who was threatened by Jacobs, told SVPD.

Officers responding to the initial report arrived at the residence in the 900 block of Verde Drive at approximately 10:40 a.m. Once on the scene, officers learned that Jacobs was reportedly brandishing the weapon and threatening to shoot a family member in the household. The individual called “911” for assistance then fled the residence, along with the other family members. SVPD evacuated portions of the neighborhood to ensure citizen safety.

Sierra Vista Police (SVPD) officers and Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Units were called to the scene and, as they arrived, Jacobs barricaded himself in the residence. SVPD Tactical Unit Crisis Negotiators were able to maintain telephone contact with Jacobs for the majority of the three-hour standoff, attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution. During the standoff, Jacobs fired his gun at different times out of the residence at SVPD Tactical Unit members as well as firing the gun inside the house.

At about 2:25 p.m., Jacobs was no longer responding to telephone communications. Officers suspected that he had shot himself inside the residence. To maintain officer safety, a SWAT robot was used to enter the home and search the house with SVPD Tactical Unit members. Jacobs was found critically injured inside the residence from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was given immediate medical assistance and flown from the scene to a Tucson-area trauma center where he later died from the wound.
