On Thursday, December 14, 2017 at approximately 6:52 p.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two vehicle collision at the intersection of West County 18th Street and South Somerton Avenue.

The initial investigation revealed that a silver, 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound on County 18th Street and failed to stop at the intersection of County 18th Street and Somerton Avenue and collided with a gold, 2007 Toyota Sequoia that was traveling northbound on Somerton Avenue.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office Critical Accident Response Team and the Criminal Investigation Bureau responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The driver of the Toyota Sequoia, Mrs. Doraly Correa, 41, of Somerton, was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center by the San Luis Fire Department where she succumbed to her injuries. A 5 year old male passenger was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center by the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department and later flown to a Phoenix area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Two female juvenile passengers were transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center and flown out to a Phoenix area hospital where they remain in critical condition.

The driver of the Chevy Silverado, Nathan Morales, 27, of Yuma, was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center along with the passenger Tyrone Henry Holley, 31, both with non-life threatening injuries.

Sheriff Wilmot would like to commend the Good Samaritans who risked their own lives by jumping into immediate action to extricate the passengers from both burning cars. Their heroic efforts are a testament to the compassion that is so often exhibited by members of our community.
