Two U.S. Citizens Caught Smuggling Marijuana into U.S.

A CBP canine alerted officers to the presence of marijuana within the shell of an ice chest

TUCSON, Ariz. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Arizona’s Port of Lukeville arrested a 58-year-old Arizona man and his 54-year-old female passenger Monday evening after finding marijuana inside their vehicle.

Officers referred the California man’s vehicle to secondary inspection after the pair applied to return to the United States from Mexico. A CBP canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect, leading officers to an ice chest where they discovered nearly 23 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $11,000.

Officers arrested the subjects and turned them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. The drugs and the vehicle were seized.
